Northeast Georgia Resident Pleads Guilty to Armed Drug Trafficking
ATHENS, Ga. – Mandrell Antwoin Hull, 43, of Winterville, Georgia, pleaded guilty today to armed drug trafficking charges in federal court. Hull admitted to one count of possession with intent to distribute cocaine and one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon before U.S. District Judge Tilman E. Self, III on July 22. Hull faces a mandatory minimum of 15 years in prison, with the possibility of a life sentence. The Court will determine his sentencing date. In the federal system, parole is not available.
Accountability for Repeat Offenders:
U.S. Attorney Peter D. Leary emphasized the importance of holding repeat offenders accountable. "Repeat offenders who continually disregard the law and whose actions harm our communities must be held accountable,” said Leary. “Our office will continue to do everything in our power to support the efforts of local, state, and federal law enforcement to uphold the law and keep our neighborhoods safe.”
Robert Gibbs, Senior Supervisory Special Agent of FBI Atlanta's Athens office, highlighted the significance of local and federal partnerships in combating violent crime. "Criminals like Hull continue to plague our communities with blatant disregard for the safety of others and reckless indifference to the law. It is only through our local and federal partnerships that we are able to put a stop to these violent repeat offenders,” said Gibbs. “This case is another example of how the FBI and our law enforcement partners are dedicated to keeping the streets of Georgia safe for everyone in our community.”

Court documents and statements revealed that Hull was on supervised release for a 2018 federal conviction for marijuana distribution. On April 11, 2023, the United States Probation Office (USPO) requested assistance from the FBI in Athens to search Hull’s residence in Oglethorpe County, Georgia, suspecting that he was storing illegal drugs. During the search, agents and officers found cocaine, $32,826 in drug proceeds, and a loaded 9mm pistol. Hull has a history of felony convictions, including five in the Superior Court of Athens-Clarke County and one in the Superior Court of Gwinnett County, along with his prior federal felony conviction. It is illegal for convicted felons to possess firearms.
**Project Safe Neighborhoods:**
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program that brings together law enforcement at all levels and the communities they serve to reduce violent crime and gun violence, making neighborhoods safer. On May 26, 2021, the Department of Justice launched a violent crime reduction strategy strengthening PSN based on fostering trust and legitimacy in communities, supporting community-based violence prevention organizations, setting focused and strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring results.
The FBI Athens Resident Agency Middle Georgia Safe Streets Gang Task Force and the Oglethorpe County Sheriff’s Office investigated the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Mike Morrison is prosecuting the case for the government.
